Building a deck is certainly within the skill levels of most homeowners and weekend do-it-yourselfers. There aren’t a lot of complicated framing issues and the power tool requirements are quite modest. However, there are a few things you need to be aware of before you even start building your new deck.
The first place to start is always at the township office. Talk to the building inspector to find out exactly what code requirements there are in your municipality. Ask about things like footer depths and setbacks from property lines. You don’t want to build a deck only having to tear it down later because your footers are two inches too short or you encroached upon the property line by a foot. They will also provide you with some good tips and pointers to help you pass the inspection quickly which will make your building project finish faster and safer.
Next, check out some books with pictures of existing decks to get some creative ideas about what you can do with your deck. Sure, you can build a simple rectangle. But for the same amount of time and money you might be able to add a second level or curve the front of your deck or create a shape more harmonious with your landscaping. A book about decks will open up your creativity and let you see more potential in your new deck.
Then it comes time to planning your deck. This is where you want to spend the majority of your time. The more time spent planning will lead to a more productive building time. If you spend a lot of time planning, you will foresee many of the problems you might run into and come up with solutions before they become big problems. This is the most crucial part of the building process. There are many software packages available that will help you design and plan your deck. They are invaluable!
With good software, you can layout your deck quickly and see how it will look. But more importantly, software will allow you to print out a materials list that you can take to the local home center or lumber yard and get competitive quotes on your project. The amount you save on a bid for your materials might more than offset the cost of the software.

I was perusing Golf for Women the other day and wondered where are the women who wear the golf attire modeled in women’s golf magazines? I’ve never seen women, professionals included, who would dress in such expensive and outrageous clothes!
It’s easy to spend money outfitting yourself for golf. Hats, sunglasses, gloves, shirts, shorts, socks, windbreakers and shoes all add up quickly, even if you shop the sales. Add in equipment, bag and cart and you have to play quite often to keep down the “CPU” cost per use.
One glossy advertisement showed a model in short shorts (like that’s allowed on courses!) that cost $275, the Tse golf shirt ($595), jacket by Ralph Lauren ($185) and two-toned Utuser shoes ($425).
That comes up to $1480; I could never hope to get the CPU on that outfit anywhere near a normal level in my lifetime! Don’t get me wrong; I love clothes. I really love shoes, but could never afford, or want, golf shoes that cost more than the national budget of some small countries.
Granted, you want comfortable shoes that don’t look like something your grandmother would wear, but you can easily find less expensive and fashionable shoes. I have several really stylish golf outfits, none of them brand name. If I totaled the cost of all of them up it would not come up to the price of the Tse golf shirt. Personally, I’d rather have several stylish outfits and one outrageously priced one.
If I were to wear a $1480 outfit to play golf, I would simply be too worried about getting dirty or perspiring to play a decent round.
In terms of picking shoes to go with the outfit the first thing to consider is that Your feet need to be comfortable! Have you ever developed a blister while walking or running? It’s all you can think about and it ruins the experience. Don’t let uncomfortable shoes ruin your golf game.
This is one area where you shouldn’t let your frugality make the decision for you. You will be wearing these shoes many times and they should be considered an investment. Comfort should be your biggest concern when buying shoes. Your foot should not move at all on your heel when you walk, yet your toes shouldn’t feel cramped. Have you shoes professional fit to your feet and walk around in them before you buy them.
Proper golf shoes should be waterproof so that your feet remain dry in damp conditions. Good socks are important too; they will wick perspiration away from you feet, keeping your feet dry and comfortable. All golf courses prohibit metal spiked shoes in the effort to protect their delicate greens. Purchase shoes that allow you to change the rubber spikes easily, and while you’re there, purchase some extras. You never know when you might lose one. Replace the spikes when they become worn.
With all the things you have to worry about while playing golf, your feet shouldn’t be one of them. When it comes to golf footwear, quality counts.

I’ve been writing articles for so long that I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing. I used to freelance before I started writing articles for myself. Many of the articles you’ll see online for a number of niches were probably written by me…and you’d never know it. Well, it paid nicely. But what about article marketing for your OWN business? Does it REALLY work? Or is it just a waste of time? I know that’s a question many ask. This article is going to give you the answer.
Let me start the answer to this question by explaining how the Internet works. If you’re wondering what that has to do with anything, just hang in there. See, the Internet is a series of tubes. No, wait a minute…that’s what that brain dead congressman said. Never mind. Okay, all kidding aside, the Internet is where most people get their information today. Why? It’s fast and easy. All you have to do is go to a search engine, look up whatever it is you’re interested in and you’ll find it. And how do you find it? In the form of an article.
Oh sure, you’ll find videos and other items, but for the most part, articles are the kind of information sharing. It’s just the nature of the beast. Well, have you ever taken a good look at some of these articles? If you do, you’ll find that at the end of almost all of them is a way to get more information. And that information usually leads you to some kind of purchase. It’s classic article marketing…and it works. If it didn’t, would so many people be doing it?
My own experience? Well, let’s put it this way. I earn about 10K a month online. Roughly 67% of that income comes directly from article marketing. These are hard figures and not speculation. Does it take some work? Yes, it does. You have to write a lot and you have to write well. People aren’t going to read articles that are poorly written. So you have to express yourself a certain way. The writing a lot part is the easy part. The writing well part, not so easy. Some people need a little help in this area. In my signature is a resource that just might help you.
Does article marketing really work? My bank account says it does.
To YOUR Success,
Steven Wagenheim

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! Some of the best and most fun parties I’ve planned have been Halloween parties. There are dozens of great Halloween party ideas. Here’s a few: monster footprints, ghosts, green pumpkins, bobbling ghosts, wicked witch, body parts, icky cobwebs, and many more. People love to dress up in different costumes as ghostly figures and celebrate Halloween with great zeal every year.
Monster Footprints - This is one of the most creative, yet seldom used, Halloween party ideas. Get a big sponge and use a marker to draw the outline of a foot. Use a scissor to cut away the extra sponge. Get a 1/8 inch aluminum pan and fill it with washable paint. Use the sponge as a stamp. Dip it in the paint and stamp these footprints in front of the door, or around the sides of dark, spooky house. Just turn the sponge upside down and you’ve got the other foot.
Ghosts - Crumple a large piece of tissue paper into a ball. Lay out another large piece of tissue paper and place the crumpled ball in the middle. Twist the edges of the tissue paper around the ball. Tie a piece of string around the base of the crumple ball to form the ghost’s neck. Use a marker to give the ghost a scary face. Make a few more and hang them from trees in the yard or from light fixtures or ceiling fans in the house.
Green Pumpkins - Try carving green peppers as jack-o-lanterns. They are small enough that you can make enough for a whole row. Mix it up using red or yellow peppers. Trick-or-treaters will get a delightful fright from the army of creepy faces at your door.
Bobbling Ghosts - For this Halloween party idea, you’ll need some helium filled balloons and a several large pieces of cheesecloth. Place the balloon in the middle of the cloth and tie it off at the bottom with a piece of string or twine. Draw a nasty looking face on the cloth. Make a few of these and place them in a box. When the box is opened the ghosts will fly up and give everyone a fright. Alternately, you can hang them in a window or near a fan and watch them float around in the breeze.
Body parts - Use this great Halloween party idea for a dimly lit room in your house or in your yard. Your friends and trick-or-treaters will be grossed out by a bowl full of body parts. Fill the bowl with slimy hot dogs and cooked spaghetti. Toss in some onions for the eyeballs. Blow up a red balloon with water and spread it with strawberry jam. Instant brains! This Halloween party idea will surely horrify your friends.
Icky cobwebs - You’ll want to dim the lights in the room for this Halloween party idea. Cut some strings and paste them to the ceiling. Before the unsuspecting party-goers enter, wet those strings with water and when people will walk in, slimy strings will brush across their foreheads and scare them.
Crunching bones - Spread out some dried bread and pretzels under a rug. When people will walk on it, it will make noise as if there are bones crunching underneath. Round it out by adding some scary moaning sounds from a sound effects tape.
These Halloween party ideas will definitely make your Halloween a most memorable one.

When driving in a scenic area there are occasional road signs announcing a “vista” or “scenic overview” ahead. Cars pull over; people get out and gaze at the fetching scene. But we don’t all see the same thing. When looking at a landscape some people see a forest, others see trees. It’s the same thing in business.
When looking at a problem, a challenge, an opportunity, or a conflict some people see the overview, the “grand strategy,” or the big picture while others see details. Some people are conceptual thinkers. They reach conclusions quickly because their thought processes skip intermediate steps with a “We’ll figure that out when we get there” attitude. Others are linear thinkers and methodically proceed step-to-step taking a task to its conclusion but can slow a project into a quagmire of meticulous effort. Both the conceptual and linear thinker may, but certainly not always, arrive at the same conclusion but they will get there by following very separate paths. A business needs both the conceptual view (the forest) and the detail view (the trees) in order to thrive.
Very few people are both conceptual thinkers and detail thinkers so it is important to know and understand the thought processes of the people you work with. It is especially important when creating work teams to have both conceptual and detail thinkers working together so that your projects with be conceptually sound and have the details done correctly so no steps are forgotten but there is a problem: conceptuals and detailers hate working together.
Big Picture folks feel that detailers bog them down in the morass of inconsequential minutia while detail oriented people feel the conceptuals overlook or bypass important steps so managing an activity to completion often requires walking a tightrope of negotiation between both camps and building consensus to keep a project moving forward without overlooking potential problems.
That “scenic overview” is beautiful because of every tree, shrub, weed, rock, pebble, and butterfly. When these detail elements are assembled into a forest, it becomes a grand vision. Try and do the same with all your projects.
